    PROFILES OF GHANA NATIONAL GOVERNING COUNCIL MEMBERS OF APRM

    Prof. Miranda Greenstreet

    PROF. MIRANDA GREENSTREET
    MEMBER

    Prof. Miranda Greenstreet received her university education at the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London. She worked with the University of Ghana for over three and a half decades, and was the Director of the Institute of Adult Education for ten of those years, having been Lecturer in Labour Studies and Principal of the Accra Workers’ College, as well as Deputy Director of the Institute Adult Education. She has served on several boards and committees of the University of Ghana, in the country and at the Regional and International levels. Prior to joining the University of Ghana she had worked in the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation as a features writer, producer and commentator.

    She is the Chapter Leader of the Rome-based Society for International Development (SID), President of the West African Distance Education Association, Chairman of the Gender Development Institute and an Executive Member of the World Association of NGOs (WANGO). Prof. Greenstreet is a past President of the Zonta Club of Accra, a classified     service organisation, and past Governor of District 18 of Zonta International, as well as a member of the International Nominating Committee of Zonta International.

    She was selected in 1992 for a National Arts and Culture Award in appreciation of the immense contribution that she has made towards the educational and cultural development of the nation. In May 1993, she was voted the Marketing Woman of the Year by the Ghana Chartered Institute of Marketing. In 1993,1997 and again in 2000, she was appointed Chairman of a Committee to determine the salaries of the President of Ghana as well as certain other functionaries, as stipulated in Ghana 1992 Constitution.

    In March 1995, a Distinguished Meritorious Award was conferred on her by the University of Ghana for exemplary service and research and for attracting resources to the University of Ghana. During the year 2000 and 2004, she chaired the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) that monitored the Parliamentary and Presidential Elections.

    rof. Greenstreet has been a visiting lecturer/research scholar at several universities in the United States of America, the Netherlands, and Denmark. She is a social worker, an advocate for gender equity and equality and a human rights activist. Thus for 12 years she served on the Ghana National Committee Against Apartheid and was the National Organiser for 8 of those years. Another organisation that she devoted a considerable amount of energy on is the Valco Trust Fund, on which she served from 1980 – 2002 and was the Chairman from 1988 – 2002. Prof. Greenstreet has several publications in the field of education, labour relations, gender and development issues and is a consultant for national, regional, and international organisations in these fields.

    In December 1999 she was voted one of the stateswomen of the Millennium. In 2003 she was honoured by the Institute of Adult Education University of Ghana, Legon, for her contributions to the Institute, and in March 2004, the University of Ghana conferred on her the degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) in recognition of her contribution to the development of Adult Education in the University of Ghana and service to Ghana.

    During that same month the President appointed Prof. Greenstreet a member of the National African Peer Review Mechanism Governing Council that had been set up as part of the NEPAD initiative.
